WHISTLE A MAP
I am motivated by the challenge of engaging with materials in the studio, and how through that engagement I locate myself. The paintings act as a record of my body as the marks and moves accumulate defining the structure and surface of the paintings, and it’s humbling to encounter one’s own gestures. My experiences, environment, and emotions emerge as form, figure, and color.
I begin a painting by giving myself something to react to like a mark or wash, then borrow a shape or form from a previous painting or sample the incidental marks from the studio floor. Then paying close attention to the unique circumstances of each painting, and working in an intuitive and reactive way, I can see the paintings develop individually. The pace at which I work allows the work to contain the day-to-day and bear witness to my version of the world.
The title of the show suggests an individual journey and recalls voice, melody, and wind. It relates to abstraction and trying to describe a place with indirect means in a way that captures both the story of the teller and the spirit of the place.
